Types of Natural Leather
While there are several types of fabricated leather in the market ranging in quality and price, there are very few types of natural leather. A genuine leather product refers to one that has been made from the hide or skin of an animal that has been tanned to prevent decomposition. Furthermore, leather-based fabrics that have more than 0.15 mm thick surface coating is not considered to be genuine leather. There are four main names used to refer to different types of natural leather.

1. Full Grain Leather
Full Grain Leather is the most expensive type of leather and is made from the natural hide of the animal. This type of leather is the most durable because its grain has not been interfered with. Its aesthetic value makes it suitable for high-end leather products such as high-quality shoes and furniture.
2. Top Grain Leather
Top Grain Leather is the most common type of leather and is made from the top layer of the animal hide. Significantly thinner than the full grain leather, the top grain leather is more flexible and easier to work with. This type of leather is also used for high-end products but is considerably cheaper than full grain leather. Top grain leather is polished, buffed and coated to suit the product requirements.
3. Split Leather
Split Leather is the most affordable type of natural leather available and is made from the bottom layer of the hide. It is often referred to as “Genuine Leather” and is used to make Suede products. Split leather is more delicate than Top and Full Grain leather. The affordability of this type of leather makes it suitable to make lower ticket products such as pouches, slippers, and affordable furniture among other things.
4. Corrected Grain Leather
Corrected Grain refers to leather whose natural grain has been altered artificially. This type of treatment is mainly done to Full and Top Grain leather that has too many natural scratches or scars. Corrected grain leather is less durable than natural grain leather. Nevertheless, the flawless and smooth finishes and unique dye treatment make corrected grain leather products rather appealing to consumers.
